Sketching in Pencil and PaintInstructors Debra Keirce and Maria Bennett Hock1 Day Workshop: Saturday, Dec 3, 9am to 4pmMember: $95, Not yet a member: $105; includes use of all suppliesAll skill levels are welcome. Ages 12 and over.Deb Keirce will teach how to recognize and draw a likeness from a photo. No matter what medium you work in, it is important to recognize value shapes. You cannot achieve high levels of realism with lines alone. This part of the workshop will appeal to anyone who would like to see a higher level of realism in their work. Using just graphite, sketch paper, and a trusty eraser, we will sketch a variety of subjects from photo references. We will emphasize capturing a likeness quickly and accurately. Students will go home with several first drafts of sketches, and suggested daily practices to keep their drawing muscles strong.(Bring your own lunch to eat before, after or during breaks)Saturday Dec 3, 1pm to 4pmMaria will teach alla prima portraiture from a photo reference. This way of painting uses techniques that apply thick opaque brush strokes directly. Maria paints wet on wet, with loose, bold shapes that suggest forms. This allows you complete a portrait sketch in a single sitting. She will demonstrate each step, in detail, using oil paints. This part of the workshop will be helpful to anyone who would like to learn more about painting portraits of people from photographs. Students are encouraged to bring a box that can hold a flat 8 inch square panel. They will need it to conveniently transport their wet oil paintings home. The paintings will be dry in a few days. We suggest waiting a week before you handle them.
